I love Christmas...of course...but one of the most exciting things about Christmas since I have become a Mrs. is Christmas cards! I love the tradition of taking a good family picture, making the perfect card, sitting down to Christmas music to address them, seal them, and stamp them with the perfect Christmas stamp, and then finally sending it to all of my family and friends! It has become something that I look forward to each year!... I also love GETTING them. Going to the mailbox each day is so much fun when you can almost guarantee that there will be fun cards and pictures inside! This year, I stole Kara's idea to hang ribbon on my kitchen cabinets and hang all of my cards with clothespins. It has been so much fun to see them all displayed and to add to it each day! I have a feeling that I may run out of room very soon!...but, that's ok! The more the merrier! Here's a little history about the Christmas card...
The first commercial Christmas cards were commissioned by Sir John Callcott Horsley in London, 1843, and featured an illustration by Henry Cole. The picture, of a family with a small child drinking wine together, proved controversial, but the idea was shrewd. Two batches totaling 2050 cards were printed and sold that year for a shilling each.
"Official" Christmas cards began with Queen Victoria in the 1840s. The British royal family's cards are generally portraits reflecting significant personal events of the year. In 1953, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first official White House card. The cards usually depict White House scenes as rendered by prominent American artists. The number of recipients has snowballed over the decades, from just 2000 in 1961 to 1.4 million in 2005.
And here is the PoeFam's history of Christmas cards...this is our 6th Christmas as husband and wife and I am so thankful that we started this tradition from the start...
