9-1-1

Now that a few days have passed, I think I can ALMOST laugh at myself for what we went through on Monday night. ... Let me preface by saying that everyone is fine and that no one's life was ever in danger...it was just my first, real, traumatic "mommy moment" in the 5 1/2 months that my little man has been here....so here goes...

Matt and I decided that it would be fun to load up Quinn and the puppies and head to the church to upload the laughing video that you have seen on the blog. So, I got the puppies in, buckled in Quinn and threw the keys in the drivers seat. I ran in the house to grab my camera, and as my feet were hitting the threshold, I hear the car doors lock. I yelled at Matt in panic and he assured me that my door would still be unlocked. I quickly ran to the driver's side and, sadly, it was locked too. ... Most of you would now think...no problem...run in the house and get the spares. Well, we have been missing our spares for months and had NO idea where they could be. So, as Matt entertained a very happy boy through the window of the car, I rummaged through every purse, bag, drawer, closet and cabinet looking for the missing keys. As minutes went by (probably 5 max!) I got more and more panicked and told Matt that I just wanted to bust the window!!! Since Quinn was still smiling and the puppies were happily licking his toes, we all knew that breaking the window was not necessary, but I wanted my baby out!!! After giving up on the search for the keys, I decided that I was going to look up the number for Pop-a-lock while Matt called a friend that he thought might have a way to get into a locked car. As Matt is on the phone and I am "googleing" the locksmith, I decided that 9-1-1 would be a much better, faster and cheaper option. So, I called, with tears in my voice, and explained that my baby was locked in our car in the garage. I asked if it was too hot for him and the dispatcher assured me that he would be perfectly fine. Within 5 minutes, we heard the sirens and saw the lights of the fire truck coming down our street. The men quickly hooked up their device and started trying to unlock the door. Although it took no more than 10 minutes, it felt like an eternity and Quinn was starting to get upset from all of the commotion. I nervously knocked on his window and smiled at him! I was trying to get him to calm down and just prayed that they would hit the STUPID unlock button. Watching their 'stick' slip from the button was the most un-nerving thing I have ever experienced. ... As soon as they got it, I took out my sweaty, confused baby and ran outside of the garage with him...holding him, kissing him, and telling him how much I loved him. He was JUST FINE...smiling and loving all of the attention!!! So, I handed him to his daddy and ran in the house to get my camera. Quinn HAD to have his picture with the firemen that "saved him!" As soon as the picture was taken, the firetruck was gone, and the puppies were drinking lots of water, I lost it. I held Quinn as Matt held me and sobbed! I felt SO bad and was so thankful that it was over. After a few minutes, I called my parents to tell them how bad of a mom I had just been...and, as I'm talking to them, I FOUND THE KEYS! Are you KIDDING ME!!? They were in one of Quinn's little diaper bags that we rarely take. CRAZY!!!....

So, there's the story...thank you, Jesus, for a happy ending! :)

bless your heart! that would be so scary! i'm so thankful it turned out fine.

oliver probably wishes that would happen to his baby brother so that a real, live, big, red firetruck with firemen would come to our house. i'd better not let him read this post.

So scary, but your mommy instinct kicked in and did the right thing and Quinn was entertained the whole time. Such a cutie!

Oh my goodness, how scary! I'm glad everything worked out okay and that Quinn was happy with the puppies and was probably oblivious to what was going on!

The good thing is that you were far more traumatized than Quinn ever was through that whole experience! I know you were so relieved to have him out safe and sound. God bless the firemen!!

let me start by saying that you aren’t the first mommy or the last that will do that! I TOO have been there. I remeber it like it was yesterday. Will was in Cali training for Iraq and I had just gone grocery shopping. I thought Jackie is sleeping, I will take the groceries in really fast and then take her out and put her in her crib, sounded too easy. like you the doors locked on me and I had NO other key. So after 25 minutes the lock guy came and we got her out UHHHHHH. It seemed like so much longer. Now we all have a great story to tell when our babies are older. So happy your sweet one is OK! You’re a great MOM!
